Ecce Homo
Philosophical depth meets streamlined business process – or: how to build a lighthouse from ivory.
Who is behind it?
Me. Matthias – digital since Atari, philosopher by convictions, working at interfaces for two decades now where technologies, content, convictions, business demands meet... and sometimes clash with applicable regulations. I have had the opportunity to oversee several large-scale projects in regulated environments – ranging from GDPR compliance in marketing organizations of various sizes to the implementation of BaFin-regulated payment services and ethics assessments in the EU-funded deep tech sector. The research that gave rise to the Ethaas process culminated in an MBA thesis: Ethics as a Service? The Case(s) for AI-Assisted Ethics & Compliance Assessments – and thus serves not only as a theoretical foundation but also as a guiding principle: ethics that works. Not in spite of, but with the tools of the present.

● Services
All things Ethics
Ethics Consulting
Consulting on ethics self-assessments and compliance issues
Whether you're dealing with the ethical requirements of EU funding for the first time or need ongoing support with compliance issues – with Ethaas, I help you ask the right questions before the funding agency does. Pragmatic, context-sensitive, and to the point.
Ethics Reporting
Structured Ethics Report for EU Horizon and other funding programs
A comprehensive ethics report is not optional for many EU funding programs, but a requirement. The Ethics-as-a-Service process delivers precisely that: a methodologically sound, EU-compliant report – in a fraction of the time required by traditional consulting approaches. In-depth in content, streamlined in process, and proven in practice.
Independent Ethics Advisor
Independent member of your project's Ethics Board
Some funding programs and project structures require formally independent ethics consultation as part of the governance framework. I can assume this role – as an external, independent member of your Ethics Board, with the necessary professional background and no conflict of interest.
Trainings & Workshops
Employee training on the EU AI Act, GDPR and AI tools – with an ethics component
Regulatory knowledge alone is not enough. Those who use AI tools in their company also need an understanding of where ethical pitfalls lie – in practice, not in textbooks. Ethaas offers training courses and workshops that combine legal principles and ethical reflection: understandable, practical, and tailored to the specific department.
● FAQ
Questions to which we already know the answers.
This depends on the funding format and project category. For many Horizon projects, an ethics self-assessment is mandatory – for certain technologies and risk classes, external consultation is also required or expected during the assessment. An early check to determine which requirements apply to your project is always advisable – and that’s precisely what ethaas is for.
As early as possible – ideally, not just before the next review. An ethics assessment conducted at the beginning of a project can influence its development and prevent real problems. One commissioned shortly before the deliverable date is primarily a bit stressful (for everyone involved). Ethaas ideally supports projects from the outset but can also step in at short notice.
Traditional ethics consulting often comes from an academic or medical context and is poorly prepared for startup realities: too slow, too expensive, too far removed from the technical details.
Law firms cover the compliance aspect, but not a genuine ethical assessment. And the costs are completely different, too.
Ethaas combines philosophical and methodological foundations with technical understanding, startup experience, and an AI-supported process that significantly reduces throughput time.
Confidentiality is not a secondary point, but a structural design criterion of the ethaas process.
Sensitive company information will not be fed into public AI systems.
What is processed using AI is determined jointly in advance – taking into account NDA, GDPR and project-specific requirements.
All parties involved sign corresponding confidentiality agreements.
Yes. The ethaas process was developed and tested in the EU Horizon context, but it is transferable to other funding formats, regulatory contexts and internal ethics review processes.
This is particularly relevant for companies that fall under the EU AI Act and have to provide corresponding evidence, as well as for projects in regulated sectors such as health, critical infrastructure or financial services.
